Danfoss frequency converter injects strong new energy power and opens up green navigation in the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River

In response to the call for "ecological priority and green development" in promoting the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Three Gorges Navigation Administration of the Yangtze River launched the new energy power transformation work of the first Yangtze River official ship "Haixun 12909" in early 2019.


The 704 Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Corporation has undertaken the task of the ship's new energy power transformation project. The ship is equipped with 0.68MWh lithium iron phosphate batteries, and the power system adopts the latest international integrated technology of DC grid power supply, distribution, and driving, with a maximum speed of 21km/h. The key equipment for this renovation project, DC network distribution and drive frequency conversion cabinet, was entrusted to Danfoss Transmission for design and manufacturing by 704 Institute. At that time, during the Spring Festival, Danfoss Transmission Factory worked overtime day and night, setting a record in producing and delivering this water-cooled DC distribution drive cabinet to customers within one and a half months.
In this cabinet, Danfoss drives VACON ® The frequency converter includes a DC-DC DC battery driver, a traditional main motor driver, low harmonic AFE front-end rectification technology, and a daily power supply on board.

DC-DC converter control technology based on VACON ®  The NXP platform hardware is suitable for various popular battery materials in the market. Through unique "inter leave" control technology, combined with energy management systems, the battery can be charged and discharged, and multiple modules of different power sizes can be connected in parallel to increase power and achieve safe and redundant performance.

AFE control technology based on VACON ®  The NXP platform hardware has been highly praised by users in the market for its stability, maturity, and uniqueness. In addition to the common functions of low harmonics, DC boost, and feedback to the power grid, AFE parallel connection with different powers and common mode circulation suppression technology have been patented. Seamless grid connection without any additional power detection device is sufficient to demonstrate the deep and unique technical foundation of this product.

Conventional motor control is based on VACON ®  NXP platform hardware, with its robust motor control performance, is proficient in controlling AC asynchronous motors, permanent magnet (IPM, SPM) motors, separately excited synchronous motors, DFIG (doubly fed motors), and reluctance motors.

Grid connected converter control technology based on VACON ®  NXP platform hardware, which integrates AFE, u-grid, and Island applications, perfectly embodies the powerful functions and future development prospects of power electronic control in new energy applications. Micro grid control technology can seamlessly connect to the grid, independent control of active and reactive power, and control modes such as power droop (Drooping), making frequency converters unique in marine hybrid power and new energy, just like generators. Island application technology can convert DC into a low harmonic AC power supply with the required frequency and voltage. The three modes are integrated and flexibly switched, covering all applications in the current market.
In this hybrid drive cabinet, all modules are based on VACON ®  The NXP platform has selected different application software for different applications. The same hardware and underlying software platform, combined with different application downloads to select different application macros, enable Danfoss VACON ® The technology is flexible and simple in practical use in DC networking systems, and it also reflects convenience for equipment maintenance and updates in the later stage.
